My friend David owns IAP Fine Art, and is a successful art dealer who has joint premises with me here in the east end of London. One of his collectors of Chris Gollon’s work is a man called Jon who also likes to commission unique and interesting things from me. This commission is an 18ct white gold ring, with a hammered masculine effect, set a 2.3 carat square-cut Columbian emerald.
This is an unusual ring, as the emerald is set down into the gold. The metal is then spread to the emerald’s edge. Emeralds are very fragile stones, as you may have seen from my first blog entry on the Moh’s hardness scale. It’s not recommended that this method of setting an emerald be used, as you have a 50% chance or more of damaging the stone. It takes extreme skill and experience to accomplish successfully this type of setting. When one has successfully achieved such a setting, great relief is felt, as emeralds of this quality don’t come cheaply, as I wipe the sweat from my brow…
